Inkmason Original: Hand Sketching
Nowadays, architects and designers rely mostly on computer software through out the whole design process. The ability to communicate our ideas has been greatly enhanced with the help of computer-aid vector and modeling software, as well as programs that help us to manage the design like BIMs. Nevertheless, these tools must serve the purpose of communicating our ideas and concept effectively, and not otherwise limiting our creativity with set parameters and programming language. That’s why designers in Inkmason International are always encourage to create design with different means including… hand sketches.
During one of our recent projects, our Chief interior designer Kris Zhou uses her skilful manipulation of simple lines and color blocks on tracing paper to effectively convey her concept to her client. She believes that the simplest way is always the best especially in communication. Kris created diagram of functions to explain to her client the rational behind the location of different spaces. Then she developed circulation route that effectively links all these spaces together. With the thorough understanding of the plan, Kris then moved on to explain to the client the design concept with the help of her sketches that captured the core value of our client’s company.
“With our hand sketch drawings and details, we help our client to paint a mental image our design.” Kris described.
“Unlike computer generated images which has a lot of hard edges, hand sketches are free formed and very dynamic. One sketches can sometimes have many different interpretation and that leaves us room to be more creative.” Kris added, “Sometimes client feels more involved during the whole process if hand sketches are used.It becomes a two-way communication and that always leads us to a more well fit design solution.”
